The gift of reading is among the most powerful gifts we can give to those we love. In a world where more and more things have to be done online, reading has become the standard exchange currency for information. Reading is essential to economic independence and personal freedom as well as the ability to learn and acquire new skills as demands change over time. This month we feature FEA Reading Trainers throughout Florida who are helping teachers
spread strategies for teaching reading. Books make great gifts at any time of year, and we have included some suggestions for books that will foster the love of reading in young people this season. Anything we do to strengthen reading skills and encourage the love and habit of reading constitutes a gift that keeps on giving and grows in value over time.

Reading Comprehension - The Ticket to the Future
In the last few years all educators in all grade levels and subject areas have been asked to incorporate reading into their daily classroom activities. Some instructors have added silent, sustained reading at the beginning of their class period, and others have added reading and writing projects related to their curriculum. Despite the concerted efforts, middle and high school students have not demonstrated extraordinary gains in reading based on normed and criterion
referenced test scores. Given the incredible pressure educators feel to teach the critical concepts in their subject areas, keep pace with grade level and content area expectations, and gather and record student progress data, it seems like too much to expect hard working educators to be reading teachers, too. Many teachers ask why.

ER&D Reading - Best Practices for Educators
|

FEA, through its affiliation with AFT's ER&D, offers educators two premier professional development courses in reading. Both courses, Beginning Reading Instruction (BRI) and Reading Comprehension Instruction, align with current research on effective instruction to promote strong reading skills in students.
Beginning Reading Instruction provides teachers of students who are learning to read with the research, strategies and application practice on the Big 5 - phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
The Reading Comprehension Instruction course is suitable for all educators who wish to improve their students' comprehension skills. In this course, participants learn the research base on reading comprehension and vocabulary development. They also learn and practice a range of instructional strategies for both narrative and expository texts.
